The new Old Colorado City: New businesses bring different vibe

For decades, Old Colorado City has had T-shirt shops. It's had good ethnic restaurants. It's had tchotchkes. And now it has something else: buzz.

Feeling full after lunch and relaxing on the sofa, I started to understand the values of Hyem. Your regular family orientated chain pub it is not, but it seems to pitch itself as a local with a bonus. These and the onion rings were generously portioned and accompanied by a selection of dips including BBQ, sweet chilli, humus, olives, garlic and sour cream. The old guard has responded to the newcomers with dabs of suspicion and curiosity as well as open arms. The phone number continues to be (785) 267-1958. The website is now http://tscionline.com.But the best was yet to come, the piece de resistance - homemade apple crumble with blackberries served with either hot custard or ice cream. An absolute treat it has to be said!Transportation Safety Consultants Inc. has relocated to 1105 N.W. Lower Silver Lake Road from its Forbes Field location. The new facility offers two acres of concrete parking for semitrailers and a modern training room. With the expansion of the company to include locations in Kansas City and St. Louis, a larger general office was needed and staffing has grown to nine employees.I found my chicken well seasoned and succulent, while my chomping companion reassured me the beef was equally good. For a pub it feels quite stylish inside, as the interior provides an eclectic mix of furniture with leather sofas, wooden panels and even a chandelier. Although it may lack a definite restaurant area, there are secluded decking sections around the room offering enough privacy for those who wish to eat.The business remains at 2500 S. Kansas Avenue. Phone is (785) 232- 7000; e-mail is sales@expertoffroad.com.TSCI has more space, more employees"I feel like it's its own entity," says L.A. Martin, 26, who moved to the west side three years ago and recently opened Domino, a "salvaged decor and modern wares" boutique on 25th Street just north of Colorado Avenue. "It draws more of an artistic and intellectual crowd."Terry and Brian Stevens have purchased Expert Offroad Inc. and have changed the name to Expert Offroad and Automotive L.L.C. The business still specializes in offroad jeep, SUV and truck parts, accessories and installation but have added a full service automotive shop that can do everything from oil changes to complete engine replacement. She recently was conducting a meeting with corporate reps when three young people sporting tattoos and piercings strolled through the gallery. The winning factor was undoubtedly the price. I found it near impossible to spend even half of my allowance, despite two of us eating a three-course meal each.Sharon Wolff, owner of Hunter-Wolff Gallery, has noticed that the newcomers are drawing ... ahem, a different crowd. But different is OK with her.Entering Hyem I noticed only one other group eating and a broad mix of ages in the clientele.isn''t by any but who''s when Admittedly this was the only dessert on offer so we weren't given much in the way of options, but it was extremely good. I was also reassured that the dessert changes each week to various other homemade delicacies.munch on a roast for watch the with friends We found the service to be friendly and very prompt throughout the meal.Recently I had that same Sunday feeling and decided to venture into the heartland of Heaton for a good old Sunday roast at a pub with a modern twist."At 82, I may not have the same taste as the now crowd, but I still do know what's good for the west side and Old Colorado City and what is not in the long run."The menu isn't extensive, but who's complaining when you can munch on a roast for pounds 3.50 and watch the football with friends.
